I want to rebuild the new laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro
Found some very useful instructions here - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Lenovo-Yoga-with-Windows-8-Pro-Office-2013-and-Visual-Studio/td-p/939305
I needed two empty USB flash drives that could be overwritten. One will hold about 150 Mb, and the other about 3.5 GB (this one needs to be between 4 GB and 32 GB). I bought two new 16 GB flash drives. Also another external HDD is required, but this can be one that already contains data. We'll use about 300 Mb on this drive.
On another pc downloaded Windows 8.1 Pro from MSDN en-gb_windows_8_1_pro_n_vl_x64_dvd_2791276
Found some very useful instructions here - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/install-windows-8-usb.htm
Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool from Microsoft and then install it (works on Windows 8 too).
Installed by running Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe - creates a icon to start it on the desktop
I plugged in a 16 Gb USB Flash drive.
Run the Windows 7 USB DVD Tool from the short cut on the desktop. This failed with an error relating to bootsect. There is some information about it here
I had trouble finding bootsect.exe, but finally found it on this page, so I downloaded it, unzipped and placed the exe in the folder where the Windows 7 USB DVD tool was installed.
Ran the tool again and it worked.
Created a new folder on the C drive called WIN81USB
Copy all the files from your USB flash drive to the newly created folder (created in the previous step).
Format the USB Flash Drive as FAT32
Copy all the files from the folder you created earlier (C:\WIN81USB, for example) to the formatted drive. Your Windows 8 installation USB drive is ready to install in UEFI mode. About 3.5 GB has been used.
Copied drivers folder from D drive to the external USB hard drive.
Installed Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013 Free from: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
Clicked on desktop item to start Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013, select Recovery Media Builder in left hand menu, to create a boot USB flash drive (on USB flash drive). This will use about 150 MB on the flash drive.
Shutdown Lenovo Yoga
Pressed the one key recovery button (little round button on left ofto power button). Select BIOS Setup.
Press right arrow to get to Boot menu.
Change Boot mode to Legacy and Boot priority Legacy. Press PF 10 to save and exit, hit enter.
The machine booted into Paragon Backup & Recovery mode. From there, made a backup of entire disk to the external USB hard drive. This created a file called Img_0_C.pbf and another called Img_0_C.pfm on hte extranal hard drive.
In the paragon menu go to general, select exit, then select Power off
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Select BIOS Setup. Press right arrow to get to Boot menu.Change Boot mode to UEFI Turned off Legacy mode Press PF 10 to save and exit, hit enter.
The machine should start up normally. Shut it down, remove USB Flash Drive, then start it up.
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS, enabled Legacay mode and made Legacy high priority and saved the changes
Booted into Paragon Backup & Recovery boot USB flash drive again. Select Browse Partitions. Six or seven partitions are lisked on Disk_0
Select each partion and delete it (Alt D then enter volume label and click OK).
Machine is now wiped, nothing on the disk
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS. Turned off Legacy mode and switched back to UEFI boot mode and saved the changes and shut down the machine.
Plug in the USB Flash Drive with Windows 8 Pro install files.
follow the Windows 8 Pro installation steps (not the upgrade option !)
After booting up into Windows 8 Pro, plug the external USB drive that had the drivers folder backup.
Install all the drivers from this folder. I selected each folder and clicked setup.
Go to device manager and check for any error or warning messages. When I did this in 'Sensors', there was a warning on HID Sensor Collection and Light Sensor
Run Windows Update
On another pc downloaded Outlook 2013 from MSDN. Copied iso onto a memory stick. Inserted memory stick into Yoga, clicked on iso then setup.
On another pc downloaded Visual Studio 2012 Professional from MSDN. Copied iso onto a memory stick. Inserted memory stick into Yoga, clicked on iso then setup.
