Neuroanatomy

(Cerebral) Cortex

Grey matter on brain surface

Neocortex

Newer (more highly evolved) cortical areas

Paleocortex

Older, more primitive cortical areas

Subcortical

Any grey matter region below the cortex

Corpus callosum

Axon tracts connecting the two hemispheres

Hippocampus

Long-term Memory - part of the limbic system

Amygdala

Emotional memory - part of the limbic system

Cingulate Gyrus

Autonomic functions regulating heart rate, blood pressure and cognitive and attentional processing - part of the limbic system

Thalamus

Filter or central switchboard - part of the limbic system

Hypothalamus

Regulates the autonomic nervous system via hormone production and release. Affects and regulates blood pressure, heart rate, hunger, thirst, sexual arousal, and the sleep/wake cycle - part of the limbic system. located below the thalamus, just above the brain stem. Roughly the size of an almond in humans

Limbic system

A group of structures that mediate appetites, emotions and memory

Caudate

motor/emotional modulation

Putamen

motor/emotional modulation

Globus Pallidus

motor/emotional modulation

Cerebellum

Coordination of thinking, movement and emotion - rear bottom
